As Ukraine continues to fight against Russia, the Ukrainian government is looking into legalizing and taxing pornography in order to find another way to fund the country’s budget. Currently, producing or distributing pornography is prohibited in Ukraine; however, there are tens of thousands of people in Ukraine earning income from creating adult content (i.e., pornography) on platforms like Only Fans. The Wall Street Journal reports that approximately 7,900 Ukrainian adults generated over $131 million on Only Fans in 2023 alone.
Proponents of this legislation believe that taxing pornographic material could provide up to $25 million each year which could be used to acquire at least 30,000 military drones.
Supporters also believe that decriminalizing sex-related activities will help prevent corrupt law enforcement officials from extorting money from sex workers and/or adult film producers who create pornography for profit.
This proposal passed an initial parliamentary vote but still needs to pass multiple legislative votes before becoming law. While generating $25 million for a country spending billions each month/each week for their military efforts may seem insignificant, proponents suggest that taxing an existing multi-billion dollar industry is better than allowing them to continue operating illegally and providing no tax dollars to support the country’s defense efforts.
