Democratic Arizona U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego predicts his party would face an uphill battle should Marco Rubio, the current U.S. Secretary of State, become the Republican presidential nominee in 2028.
And to some degree, he’s correct. Rubio, formerly a U.S Senator, continues to furher his extensive foreign policy experience in his current position and isn’t viewed as quite the firebrand as J.D Vance, Ron DeSantis and some of the other potential candidates. Moreover, he’s still somewhat young (55) as well as somewhat charismatic and soft-spoken, and Latino.
Undoubtedly, a lot of independents and moderates may see him as fresh face who’ll continue most of Trump’s policies, but without the bluster, crass, and instability. Viewed as generational-change conservative, many believe he can best build a wide Republican coalition.
On the foreign policy end, Rubio’s high-profile actions have made him widely seen as a decisive national security figure, closely involved in Trump’s major decisions. That visibility may help him appeal to voters and donors who want a tough, continuity candidate on foreign policy without Trump’s personal baggage and threats.
And his Latino background certainly wouldn’t hurt his chances. All he’d need is just half (or fewer) of them to support to him to win. Keep in mind, in 2024 Donald Trump secured between 43% and 48% of the national Latino vote, marking a historic record high for a Republican presidential nominee.
Fact: Had Latinos supported Kamala Harris as strongly as they did Barack Obama, she would have beaten Trump in 2024.
Obviously, much of his appeal to Latinos would likely depend more on his stance on immigration, jobs, and social conservatism than on his heritage alone, so support in that demographic wouldn’t be guaranteed. HOWEVER, a certain percentage of Latinos would support him straight away simply because they’d love the idea of having a Latino in the White House, especially if Rubio’s immigration policies is not as hardline as Trump’s.
If you’re a Democratic Party leader, you might want to consider having a Latino of your own, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, on the ticket because you’re probably going to need at least 60 percent support from them to win the election.
Or perhaps Sen. Ruben Gallego?
It’s still early, but I think Rubio is already a lock to be on the ticket, whether as president or vice-president.
