Political Crisis Warning: Trump’s Rise Puts U.S. at “Breaking Point”

A political analysis by Max Burns argues that the United States is nearing a political “tipping point,” with growing risks of authoritarianism under Donald Trump. Burns contends the Founding Fathers anticipated leaders who could exploit political division, resentment, and personal ambition and designed the system to prevent such concentration of power.

“It’s popular these days to claim that the Founders simply could never have comprehended a character as venal and antidemocratic as President Trump,” Burns said via Alternet, but the assertion isn’t true. “Hucksters like Trump found power as irresistible in the 18th century as they do today—the Founders knew plenty of toxic Trumpian types.”

He points to Trump’s actions—such as pardoning political allies, leveraging grievance-driven politics, and benefiting from a Congress and Supreme Court that have expanded executive power—as signs of a weakening political system. Burns warns that increasing loyalty to the presidency over institutional checks and balances reflects the kind of political breakdown the founders feared.

The analysis concludes that American democracy is facing a gradual political erosion that could lead to a fundamental transformation of the republic unless political institutions and the public push back.

“Authoritarianism has stolen upon us by degrees and now is terrifyingly close to a tipping point that will forever change the shape of our republic—if what emerges can even be called a republic at all. If we are to live up to the promise of the American experiment, the people must come together and stop our national collapse before the light of our democracy flickers out.”
